Rapper Prodigy, one-half of group Mobb Deep, died from accidental choking, The Clark County Coroner’s office has confirmed.
The Clark Country Medical Examiner made the announcement after completing an investigation following Prodigy’s death on June 20 at the age of 42.
“Cause of death was choking and the manner was accident,” the coroner said to Complex in a statement.
Prodigy, real name Albert Johnson, was first hospitalized to receive treatment for sickle cell anemia, a disease he has had since birth, days after he performed with his Mobb Deep partner Havoc in Las Vegas for the Art of Rap tour that also featured Ghostface Killah, Onyx, KRS-One and Ice-T.
Prodigy then died in the hospital after choking on an egg TMZ first reported, however, it was still unclear at the time what ultimately caused his death.
“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary N.Y. rap duo Mobb Deep,” the publicist said in a statement at the time. “We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time.”
